Driving
We highly recommend having a car for your stay as the cottages are a little off the beaten track. We are a mile up a farm track from the nearest bus stop and while there are several busses a day they are a lot more frequent from Penicuik or the Edinburgh Park & Rides.
Car hire can easily be organised from the train station and airport. Click on Thrifty or Enterprise for more details, alternatively for a car hire comparison at Edinburgh Airport see this Car Hire Search.
Buses
We have an excellent and frequent bus service running from Penicuik (4 miles away) into Edinburgh : Lothian buses. Alternatively Houstons Coaches (no. 101) run a slightly less frequent service from the farm road end (1 miles walk) into Edinburgh.
We recommend a hire car for access to the cottages as there is not a bus service to your door. Buses are however a great way to get into town without taking the car. More information can be found in our Edinburgh Directions & Parking pdf.

Getting to Eastside from the Edinburgh City Bypass (A720)
Eastside Cottages are situated just six miles from the Edinburgh City by-pass and half a mile beyond Silverburn on the A702. If you are travelling from Edinburgh, the airport, the North or the A1 these are the directions:
-
1.
To get to Eastside Cottages take the A702 (the Biggar Road) from the Edinburgh City Bypass (A720) at the Lothianburn Junction.
-
2.
From Lothianburn drive for approx. 5.5 miles southwest until you reach the village of Silverburn.
-
3.
Drive straight through the village of Silverburn.
-
4.
Half a mile beyond the village you will see a bus shelter on the right-hand side. Immediately after the bus shelter, on the right-hand side, you will see a farm track heading into the hills. Turn off the main road here and proceed up the track.
-
5.
After driving 1 mile up the track into the hills you will find the cottages.
Getting to Eastside from the South (M74 / M6)
Eastside Cottages are situated 30 miles from the Abington Junction (junction 13) of the M74, roughly a 40 minute drive. We find this by far the quickest route if travelling from the South. Directions as follows:
-
1.
From the M74 take junction 13 towards Edinburgh. Here you are 30 miles from Eastside - a 40 minute drive. Follow signs to Edinburgh and Biggar. Pass through Biggar, West Linton and Carlops villages on the A702. From Carlops, the start of Eastside’s farm track is approx. 3 miles.
-
2.
Continue along the A702 up the hill out of Carlops towards Edinburgh. Pass a camper van showroom on your right at Ninemileburn and also pass the A766 turn off to Penicuik. Continuing on the A702, there is long, straight section of road followed by a double bend. The Eastside turning is immediately after the double bend just before a bus shelter on your left.
-
3.
Immediately before the bus shelter, you will see a farm track heading into the hills. Turn off the main road here and proceed up the track.
-
4.
After driving 1 mile up the track you will find the cottages.
-
5.
The A702 is a fast road so reduce your speed round the last bend to avoid missing the turning. If you reach Silverburn you have gone 0.5 miles too far.
